Know what each digit is worth, and round off with purpose.
- Recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number — thousands, hundreds, tens and units — and state its value.
- Break numbers up and put them back together flexibly, for example 3 460 as 3 000 + 400 + 60, and as 34 hundreds + 60.
- Round off to the nearest 10, 100 and 1 000, and explain why 3 460 rounds to 3 000 but 3 560 rounds to 4 000.
- Use rounding off to estimate before calculating, and judge whether an answer is reasonable.
- Explain how the place value of each digit — not just how big the digits look — decides which of two numbers is larger.
