Paper That Holds a Load

Natural Sciences and Technology · Term 2

Start Your Quest

On this Quest, you'll discover…

Turn a flat sheet of paper into something strong enough to carry weight.

  • Find out that there are different ways to strengthen a material such as paper to build a strong structure.
  • Fold paper into hollow pillars — circular, triangular and square — and test each one.
  • Roll paper into long thin tubes to make struts, and test how much they hold.
  • Investigate which pillar is strongest, draw a table and a bar graph of your results and discuss what they show.
  • Draw a conclusion about which shape strengthens paper best, and say how you know.
